Falcons Battle Red Bank Regional to a Tie

December 3, 2008

Jon Roman Vs. Red Bank Regional

The Monroe Falcons Ice Hockey Team opened its 2008-2009 season on Monday with a trip to the Red Bank Armory, facing off against the Bucs of Red Bank Regional High School. Despite being down by as many as 3 goals (three times) and trailing the Bucs for the majority of the game, the team was able to put together a 7 goal 3rd period rally to walk away with a 10-10 tie.

The first period was all Red Bank Regional as they took a quick 3-0 lead and held the Falcons scoreless through the first 15 minutes of play. Determined to climb back, the Falcons got on the board in the 2nd period with back to back goals from junior defenseman Jon Roman and freshman forward Stan Monak. The Bucs however, would regain their 3 goal lead by tallying 2 back to back goals of their own. To ensure the team did not trail by 3 goals at the end of another period, senior forward Artie Thompson made the game 5-3 with a goal just 14 seconds before the buzzer.

After an early Bucs goal in the 3rd period to put the Falcons behind by 3 for the third time in the game, the Falcons gradually began their 7 goal rally that would result in an eventual 10-10 tie. Making the rally possible was Jon Roman (4 goals), Stan Monak (1 goal), senior forward Ryan Kloby (1 goal) and sophomore forward Frank Stuto (1 goal).

The Falcons trailed the Bucs during the game from 40 seconds into the first period to less than 2 minutes remaining in the 3rd period. Jon Roman capped off the comeback with the 10th and game tying goal after trailing for almost 43 minutes during the game.

Adding assists to the goals on the night were senior forward David Knotts (2), Artie Thompson (2), Frank Stuto (2), sophomore defenseman Nick Modugno (1), senior defenseman James Domino (1) and Ryan Kloby (1) . Freshman Stan Monak scored his first High School goal in the 2nd period and added a second goal in the third. Jon Roman broke the record for most goals in a season by a defenseman in a single game with 5.

Sophomore goaltenders Justin Pieron and John Carroll combined for 22 saves.

The Falcons are back in action this Sunday at Gold Coast Arena versus Jackson Memorial. Game time is set for 6:15 p.m.
